Find the Right Learning Tools With the STEM.org Product Registry

A free place to discover STEM toys, games and classroom resources—and turn a learning question into a useful shortlist, with clear product information and verifiable recognition.

STEM.org Educational Research™

A teacher wants children to observe how a caterpillar changes into a butterfly. A family might want to explore the same question at home. Which kit could support careful observation over time, and what does the recognition on its box mean? The first step is finding an exact product, then examining what learners could do with it and checking the record behind any Trustmark.

The STEM.org Product Registry brings that work into one free public resource, with listings for toys, games, kits and learning tools from many companies. Visitors can search, narrow the results and open individual profiles without purchasing a membership. STEM.org does not earn affiliate commissions from product purchases.

The value is in what happens after the first search: turning a broad idea into a few specific products worth investigating.

Give the search a learning purpose

For our butterfly example, begin with what the children will do: make dated drawings or observations, compare what they notice across several days and use those records to describe changes. Keeping those observation records gives the activity a clear educational purpose and the search more direction than simply looking for something “educational.”

A family might have time for a brief observation each morning. A teacher must also plan for weekends, school breaks and several children viewing the same habitat. Keep those practical questions beside you while browsing: learner age, the time the project needs, adult responsibilities, space and the manufacturer’s current care instructions. A kit should fit the setting in which it will actually be used.

This is where a directory earns its place in planning. It can introduce an unfamiliar option and organize product information while leaving the educational judgment with the person who knows the learners.

Follow a real search from broad results to a shortlist

Enter butterfly in the Registry search. Read each result against your learning purpose: does it offer an opportunity to observe a living insect, examine a model or explore a related activity? Products can share a subject while supporting different kinds of investigation.

Narrow the search to Butterfly Garden to compare several editions. For this walkthrough, open Insect Lore’s Butterfly Garden® Homeschool Edition to look beyond the product name. The photographs show the particular edition, while the description explains the butterfly-raising activity. Bring your original question back to that information: how could children observe change and record what they notice?

The available filters also include STEM Focus, Estimated Price and company, alongside recognition options. Use them to make the results easier to investigate. An age band is a starting point, and an estimated price helps with planning; the manufacturer’s current age guidance, safety instructions, price and availability still need checking.

A word match is only a starting point. A butterfly-themed item may support a very different experience from observing metamorphosis. The learner’s proposed activity is what makes a result relevant.

Read the exact product, then check its recognition

The Butterfly Garden® Homeschool Edition profile shows the STEM.org Authenticated™ Trustmark printed on the product’s box. That makes the connection between the physical product and its recognition easy to see. The profile identifies the specific kit and provides links to its issuer records; the package image alone cannot establish whether a credential is current.

Follow STEM ID 21022781. At the October 4 check, the issuer’s record named Butterfly Garden Homeschool Edition and showed active STEM.org Authenticated™ recognition through January 31, 2027.

That distinction matters across the Registry. A public listing does not, by itself, mean a product holds STEM.org Authenticated™ or Best In STEM™ recognition. Discovery includes a broader range of products. Where recognition is shown, match the name and scope to the exact item you are considering and inspect the current record. Do not extend one product’s recognition to an entire company or unrelated range.

The STEM.org verification resource provides another route to checking a STEM ID. A product’s educational evaluation also does not replace the manufacturer’s safety requirements or your judgment about suitability for a particular child or setting.

Make the shortlist useful outside the browser

Keep the exact model, profile link and any credential link with your planning notes. For a butterfly project, record what still needs checking: the edition available to purchase, current contents, care responsibilities, timing and the manufacturer’s instructions for completing the experience. Confirm the exact edition, current contents and care instructions with the manufacturer before ordering.

The Registry’s Store Locator can help you investigate retailers by location. A listed store is a contact to explore, not a guarantee that a particular item is in stock or that everything it sells carries recognition. Confirm the exact model and availability before traveling or purchasing.

For product creators considering evaluation, the manufacturer’s evidence guide explains how to document a learning claim, the learner’s actions and the exact product submitted.

Free to explore. Three ways to keep it growing.

Public exploration is free. If the Registry helps your work, we ask you to support one of STEM.org’s three participation pathways so independent research and discovery can remain accessible. Each pathway serves a different purpose.

Pursue the relevant Trustmark

Product creators can apply for STEM.org Authenticated™, an independent evaluation of the submitted product and supporting evidence. The current annual registration is $303.85 USD. Qualifying products receive the credential, STEM ID and approved assets. Payment starts the applicable process; the evidence determines recognition.

Maintain a product listing

The Product Registry account area supports product-profile submissions and management. One reviewed product listing is included with an eligible paid Authentication registration, including a registration covering a batch. A standalone listing or an additional product listing is $99 USD annually. Submit one exact product and variant per profile, with accurate information and a photo you are authorized to publish. Staff approval is required before publication and updates.

Support the public resource

Anyone can make a voluntary support contribution in an amount they choose. This helps sustain STEM.org’s independent work, including the Product Registry and its related community resources. You do not need to contribute to browse.

Listing fees support publishing and profile management. Contributions support the work. Neither purchases a Trustmark, a favorable score, Best In STEM™ recognition or preferential ranking. Included listing access follows the eligible annual registration term; additional listing subscriptions renew annually until canceled. Check the current account and application terms before proceeding.

Connect materials, people and places

The Registry sits beside Program Atlas for exploring organizations, places and programs, and the People Directory for discovering public professional profiles. Each resource answers a different part of the same planning question: what could we use, where could learning happen, and who might help?

We are continuing to develop this connected set of community resources. Start with the tools available today: open the free Product Registry, bring one learning question and investigate a few exact products. Leave with information you can act on—and a clearer idea of what learners will do next.
